Celebrating 75 Years of The VW Type 2 at Goodwood Revival

75 Years of a Cultural Icon: The VW Type 2

As motoring enthusiasts and vintage lovers prepare for this year’s Goodwood Revival, there's one special guest that's set to steal the show—not a driver, not a racing machine, but a van. An icon. A movement on wheels. The Volkswagen Type 2—better known to most as the VW Camper, the Kombi, or simply the “Bus”—turns 75 in 2025, and Revival is throwing it a party like no other.

We will be joining the celebrations as Goodwood’s hallowed circuit comes alive with the largest-ever gathering of VW “Split Screen” campers, parading in glorious technicolour each morning of the event. But this is more than a parade—it’s a tribute to a vehicle that helped define post-war Europe, the 1960s counterculture, and generations of adventure-seekers.

From Workhorse to Wanderlust: The Origins of the Type 2

The story of the Type 2 begins in 1947 when Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon sketched the first concept for a practical cargo vehicle built on the platform of the Type 1 Beetle. Just three years later, in 1950, the first Volkswagen Transporter rolled off the production line in Wolfsburg, Germany. It was practical, cheap, easy to repair, and impossibly charming.

The first-generation model, known officially as the T1, quickly earned the nickname “Splitty” due to its distinctive split front windscreen. Available in various configurations—panel van, microbus, pickup, and the now-iconic camper conversion—it proved to be as versatile as it was lovable.

It wasn’t just a mode of transport. For tradesmen, it was a workhorse. For small businesses, it became a brand on wheels. For young families and adventurous spirits, it was freedom incarnate.

From Streets to Subcultures: The Rise of a Global Icon

By the 1960s, the VW Bus had crossed the Atlantic and become the unofficial vehicle of the hippie movement, a rolling symbol of peace, freedom, and non-conformity. Painted with daisies, peace signs, and slogans, it graced music festivals, protest marches, and cross-country road trips from California to Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the Westfalia camper conversions turned the humble van into a compact home on wheels. Pop-up roofs, folding beds, sink units, and mini wardrobes transformed the Type 2 into a self-sufficient mobile living space—decades before “van life” became a hashtag.

Even into the 1980s and beyond, the Type 2 retained its cultural magnetism. It featured in films, music videos, and even toy lines. Its blend of friendly design, practicality, and DIY ethos helped it evolve from a commercial vehicle into a cult classic revered across generations.

The Goodwood Revival Tribute: A Moving Museum of the Type 2

To honour this rich legacy, the 2025 Goodwood Revival will open each day with a spectacular parade of over 100 lovingly preserved VW T1s, showcasing their various uses and guises over the decades—ice cream vans, ambulances, surf wagons, even race car haulers.

The parade is more than a visual feast. It's a time-traveling tribute to a machine that defies categories—part family car, part social statement, part adventure enabler.

Visitors can expect to see everything from pristine early ’50s models in factory livery, to psychedelic ’70s campers, to custom builds with solar panels and surfboards strapped to the roof. It’s a show of appreciation for a vehicle that has touched millions of lives—on both asphalt and emotional roads.

Why We Care at Classic Additions

At Classic Additions, we’ve long admired the enduring spirit of the VW Type 2. It’s not just a van; it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned road-tripper, a classic car collector, or simply someone who appreciates beautifully simple engineering, the T2 speaks to a universal desire for freedom, exploration, and individuality.

It’s also a vehicle that demands protection and care—which is why we’re proud to offer tailored car covers and accessories to help preserve these icons, whether they’re stored in a garage or travelling the continent.
